Investing For Beginners: The Basics
admin | June 18, 2018 | 2 | Boost Your Net WorthAre you interested in growing your net worth? For some, investing in the United States economy is confusing. There are so many economic indicators to analyze and it seems overwhelming.
The reality, however, is that nearly 55 percent of Americans invest in some capacity. These people invest in the stock market, mutual funds, or 401(k) retirement plans.
If they can do it, so can you. Read on for a guide to investing for beginners. Explore the basics and learn how you can start investing in the stock market today.
Investing For Beginners – The Basics
Before you purchase a stock or a bond, it is important to understand the concept behind each investment type. When a stock is purchased, you are buying a small piece of a publicly owned company.
As a partial owner, you earn money when the company’s market valuation grows. In layman’s terms, your return on investment grows in parallel with the company’s success.
Along the same lines, you can lose money if the company is struggling. For this reason, some consider the stock market too risky and prefer to invest in the bond market or certificates of deposit (CDs).
Bonds and CDs are lower risk because the party you are contracting with is a government entity or bank. These investment types are essentially loans to the other party. Governments and banks use bonds and CDs to raise capital.
Bonds and CDs have fixed conditions, meaning that the loan term and interest rate are pre-defined. The only risk to you is that the government or bank defaults on the loan.
To mitigate this risk, independent evaluators such as Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s issue ratings on the creditworthiness of each organization. In addition, you can earn a greater return on investment by putting your money into organizations with lower safety ratings.
Types of Stocks
There are two different types of stocks. They are referred to as common or preferred stock.
The primary difference between the two is voting rights and dividends. Holders of common stock have voting rights and can take place in company decisions, such as the selection of executives. The more shares you own, the greater voting power you possess.
Shareholders of preferred stock do not typically have voting rights. They do, however, receive dividends from the company. This means that the company distributes a portion of its earnings to each shareholder based on the number of shares they own.
Mutual Funds and Diversification
A popular investment strategy is to diversify your portfolio. Financial experts discourage investors from putting all of their money behind one company.
To reduce risk, some invest in mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The best way to describe these investments is a basket of different stocks or assets.
For example, consider a diversified option such as VHT ETF. This is a Vanguard healthcare ETF that represents a basket of different healthcare stocks and assets. Mutual funds and ETFs are both effective ways to boost your net worth.
Wrapping It Up
Investing in the stock or bond market is a great way to grow your net worth. As a company grows, you stand to benefit from increased earnings.
In some cases, you receive additional income via dividends or an interest rate on a bond. If you enjoyed this article about investing for beginners, please check out our blog for other great articles on increasing your net worth.
