Gold is one of the highest monetary metals you can find.

While it is popular amongst all of the human race, few people know where it came from and how it has evolved since ancient civilizations.

Here is a brief history of gold and where it came from.

Where Does Gold Come From?

Gold has been used widely for centuries upon centuries. There is no particular date when gold was discovered, as it was used in multiple ways in different cultures.

There was a specific time when it became more popular in modern society. This was when gold was discovered by a man named James Marshall. He was building a sawmill for John Sutter when he happened to see something shining in the creek. That was when he realized he hit the jackpot.

While people tried to keep this discovery secret, it wasn’t long before word got out. Everyone was running to start searching for their own gold. Thus began the California Gold Rush.

Gold was created when the universe was formed. Scientists believe that it came to be from star collisions. These collisions caused heavy elements to sink into the earth, forming metals like gold and iron. This is why gold can be found and mined from the earth’s crust.

How Has the History of Gold Evolved?

Gold started out in monetary value by people measuring it itself. A certain amount of silver could be equal to one part of gold. In certain places, like Greece, this was the primary way the monetary system worked.

Gold as a monetary element can be traced back to ancient civilizations. People immediately recognized gold as being a valuable element that could be traded and invested.

Eventually, gold was formed into coins, similar to what we have today. A gold coin could be around 90% pure gold with the rest being a mixture of other metals.

The Bretton Woods monetary system came into being in 1944 where gold could be converted into the U.S. dollar and vice versa. This changed the U.S. monetary system. Even after its collapse in the 1970s, the Bretton Woods system still made a lasting influence on international currency.

Now, people can use gold as monetary elements but also as fine jewelry and decor.

Types of Gold Alloys

Gold can be used in many ways. It is used by jewelers because it is so easy to form and manipulate to how they need it.

Gold can be formed into different colors by alloying it with different metals. For example, yellow gold (not yellow pure gold) is alloyed with silver and copper.

Purple gold is made by alloying gold with aluminum metal. Red gold is made by alloying it with copper.

Because gold is so easy to manipulate, people are able to alloy it with metals and turn it into something beautiful.

Gold Industry Today

The gold industry is continuing to evolve over time and will continue to do so in the years to come.

It is still being mined and invested and is widely known as a precious and valuable metal. By partnering with companies like CMI Gold & Silver you can even buy, trade, and sell gold yourself.
